Rationale and definition:
This indicator tracks the number of people displaced across national borders as a result of conflict, natural disasters, or other causes. It measures the total number refugee population by country or territory of origin. Exile and displacement due to conflict, natural disasters, or other causes undermine peacebuilding processes and the possibility of sustainable development. They also increase the risk of regional instability when refugees are hosted in neighboring countries, resulting in part from tensions with local populations.
Disaggregation:
By sex, age, religion, national and ethnic origin, and disability where possible.
Comments and limitations:
It is difficult to get accurate figures as populations are constantly fluctuating.
