End All Forms of Discrimination Against Women & Girls

Discrimination against women and girls is as old as humanity itself. It has been the stuff of human experience for centuries through families, schools, workplaces and even governments. Other times it is more obvious and blatant, such as getting paid less than men in the case of women. Other times it is embedded in customs or beliefs that women are not as capable.

And that’s exactly what the United Nations found needed to change. Goal 5 (Gender) – Target 5.1 is to end all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere. On paper, that may all seem sort of simple in practice, it’s one of the hardest things to do.

End All Forms of Discrimination Against Women & Girls

In reality it can be something very small and yet very ordinary, like telling a girl that she has to stay home while her brother goes to school. It could be a woman not getting the job but for someone who is just as qualified, and male.

Elsewhere, women have few rights over their own property or decisions about their lives. Children were often married off early when considered as the tradition. Even in the best of situations, where women are told to choose between leadership and family, or beaten when they attempt to lead.

And that form of discrimination may take different forms, but the impact is equally repressive: It holds women and girls back from leading free and full lives.

Why Ending Discrimination Matters

Fairness is merely half the problem. Ending discrimination actually helps everyone. When girls are educated, they grow up to be women who can raise their families and develop their communities. Feminine labor correlates with higher household incomes and less poverty. There is general satisfaction of the wants of multitudes, when women are at the head.

But, on the other hand, when discrimination abides, society at large loses. Anything that’s holding women back from reaching their full potential means the rest of the world is not going to be as strong as it could be.

Barriers That Still Exist

None the less, they are lower but formidable barriers. Traditions play a big role. According to culture, the message of dark news start at birth for millions of girls since boys are better than girls that a message from mother to daughter from there grandmother to granddaughter.

Another problem is that the laws are often weak or go unenforced. A country can pass a law that the both genders must be paid equally but organizations with clout can still find a way around it. There is also an epidemic of violence against women. The people who stand up for their rights are commonly threatened or harassed and sometimes attacked.

And then, of course, there are the stereotypes. For others, but not for all men, well, they just believe women can’t do the job or take on a leadership role. Even when they have the facts to support their beliefs, such attitudes keep women from being treated as equal with men.

Looking Ahead

Changes needs to happen from inside families, and schools, and workplaces, and communities. The same social manner, brothers and sisters having the same respect that’s what they have to teach their sons and daughters. Equality has to be thought of as a value that we teach in school, not just a subject matter\. If employers want to pledge good and fair pay and safe workplaces, they must stop silencing their victims through mandatory arbitration for sexual harassment and civil rights abuses.

And, last and sure as hell not least men and boys should be part of the solution. Gender equality is not a fight for women only it’s about creating the kind of society where an equal degree of growth and opportunity is available to all.
